Kookaburra spirit companion – Mandy is able to call forth a familiar in the shape of a kookaburra. So far, she has discovered that, other than making a lot of ear-piercing laughter-like noise, it can also take on other forms if she wills it to.

H I S T O R Y

Born on November 10th, 1978, Mandy is the second oldest of the four Daniels children, two years younger than her brother Clayton. A few years later, two more brothers followed, a couple of years apart. Surrounded by male siblings, Mandy grew up playing games that were mostly considered boys' games, rather than occupying herself with the typical girls' activities for girls her age, as well as preferring to wear boys' clothes, after getting used to wearing some of her brother's hand-me-downs and, if they weren't already too worn out by the time she had outgrown them, passing them onto her younger brothers. She was perfectly content with that and her parents had no problems with it, either – the only thing that mattered to them was that their children were healthy, happy and became decent people when they grew up. A tomboyish daughter wasn't anything to worry about. Much more important was ensuring that all members of the Daniels family were raised to respect the environment. As active environmentalists, Mandy's parents made sure that their children learned to be environmentally conscious from a young age. Being a vegetarian became completely second nature as well.

Developing a genuine interest in the natural world around her, Mandy decided that her future career path would follow along similar lines to her father's. Her grades were average throughout high school, but she managed to do well enough to be accepted into the University of Sydney, where she enrolled in a biological sciences programme, planning to specialize in zoology or conservation biology. Either option would be fine with her, but she can't quite make up her mind just yet - since she is in her second year of university now, though, it probably is high time for her to decide for sure.

The end of the world isn't anything that Mandy has ever heard anything about so far, but if she had, she would have most likely tried to take it in stride. Her own powers aren't unknown to her; she discovered them when she was ten years old. While on a school field trip, Mandy ended up getting lost. With no means to contact anyone, she tried to find her own way back, but didn't have much success, until a kookaburra suddenly appeared - out of place, since they weren't actually near the bush - and Mandy ended up following it. She quickly realized that no one seemed to be able to see her unusual friend, so she didn't mention the bird to anyone, with the exception of her family. Although Mandy is aware of the fact that it's not a 'real' bird, that doesn't bother her. She doesn't have any idea why its presence is there at all, but the kookaburra, Kooky, has become a companion rather than a nuisance, even if the laughter still tends to be a shock to hear out of the blue at times - especially when most other people can't hear anything.

P E R S O N A L I T Y

Usually reasonably upbeat, without being excessively so, Mandy likes to deal with things as they come, rather than worrying too much in advance. She's generally a friendly person, with a fondness for joking around and silliness when there's an opportunity for it. She can be a slacker when it comes to getting work done at times, not taking some things seriously until the very last minute, but there are certain things she does feel strongly about and is willing to put any amount of time and effort into - the environment is something she has grown up respecting a great deal and she has tried to organize mini-campaigns to promote conservation and animal rights awareness and so on at school.

A P P E A R A N C E

Mandy has fairly short hair, in a choppy, layered cut. Her eyes are hazel. Short, skinny and rather flat, she doesn't look particularly feminine, which is only highlighted by her preference for wearing boys' clothes - not because of the way they look, but because she finds them more comfortable to move around in. In her opinion, a pair of shorts or jeans and a t-shirt work fine for just about any occasion. She doesn't mind dressing in more feminine clothing for the 1% of occasions that doesn't fit into the 'just about any occasion' category, though.
